Learning
about Buffalo is lots of fun for kids, adults, and everyone! Buffalo Facts: Bison
& Buffalo are the same. Bison
is the scientific name and Buffalo is the common name.
They are descendants of the European wiscent and migrated to
North America during the Ice Age. Bison
are: §
bovines
(from the ox / cattle family); §
ruminants
(a cud chewing mammal); §
mammals
(vertebrate animals that nurse their young); §
herbivore
(animal which eats mainly plants); §
the
largest land mammal in North America! How many? During the early 1800’s they numbered 60-70 million, then were slaughtered so that by the late 1800’s there were just a few hundred; but today, with the help of buffalo ranchers, they number about 350,000.
